The National Chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Rev. Samuel Ikpea has charged sports administrators in the country to concentrate efforts on the development of grassroots sports, which he described as the bedrock of meaningful sports growth. Ikpea made this call during the 43rd annual sports competition of Anglican Comprehensive High School, Ipaja, Lagos.
” It is indeed, a misnomer that sports development, particularly, in the grassroots level has been pushed to the background, “he lamented.
” Today, we suffer from dearth of sports facilities in public schools and institutions. And it is no surprise that the country now struggle to make impacts at continental and global competitions, ” he added.
He went on also to attribute the poor performances by Nigerian athletes at several competitions to the dearth of sports and physical education teachers in schools.
Speaking further, he commended the Nigeria Football Federation for its efforts to keep the Super Eagles in top shape in preparation for the AFCON and 2018 World Cup qualification matches.
“I want to give kudos to the NFF for ensuring that the Super Eagles are prepared for the up coming games. This is, indeed, a right step in the right direction. And l believe it would definitely put the team in a good stead to claim the desired tickets, ” the sports enthusiast cum businessman enthused confidently.
