Ademola Lookman endured one of his toughest nights in Europe this season as Atlético Madrid crashed out of the UEFA Champions League following a semi-final defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
With a place in the final at stake, Atletico needed their biggest players to deliver, but Lookman struggled to make an impact against Arsenal’s disciplined defense in a tense encounter settled by Bukayo Saka’s first-half winner.
The Nigerian winger, who recently returned from injury, was trusted by manager Diego Simeone to lead Atletico’s attack once again after completing 90 minutes in the first leg in Madrid.
However, the 28-year-old found himself isolated for long periods and failed to create any clear openings before being substituted in the 57th minute for Alexander Sorloth.
It was a disappointing outing for Lookman on one of football’s biggest stages, with Arsenal successfully shutting down Atletico’s attacking threats throughout the night.
After the match, Simeone openly admitted his side could not match Arsenal’s level.
“There’s nothing to say, we’re out,” the Argentine coach said.
“We congratulate Arsenal because they competed very well. They have a strong project, a fantastic coach, and the financial power to compete consistently at this level.”
Despite the painful exit, Simeone praised his players for their effort during the campaign, although Atletico were left wondering what could have been after failing to take advantage of their opportunities across both legs.
For Lookman, the defeat marked a frustrating end to another impressive European campaign.
The Super Eagles forward has been one of Atletico’s standout performers this season, but against Arsenal, he was unable to produce the spark his side desperately needed.
Meanwhile, Arsenal advanced to their first UEFA Champions League final since 2006 and remain on course for a historic season under Mikel Arteta.
