Organized by the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) as the centerpiece of National Boxing Week, the trials served as the definitive selection ground for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The event transformed Lagos into a global hub for Nigerian talent, drawing a massive pool of elite fighters from every corner of the federation and a significant contingent of diaspora athletes who traveled from across the globe to stake their claim on the national green-and-white colors.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, was present to witness the final bouts and offered high praise for the NBF’s vision. He highlighted the strategic importance of the 147 boxers who entered the trials, noting that the inclusion of heritage athletes from abroad is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s new competitive blueprint.

“We were particularly pleased to see fighters from the diaspora with Nigerian heritage come home to compete,” Olopade remarked. “This fits perfectly into our strategy of giving opportunities to our children abroad to represent Nigeria just like every other Nigerian. Our goal is simple: to ensure the country is represented by the very best hands and legs available, regardless of where they reside.”

Olopade further credited the “enabling environment” created by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the presidency’s renewed focus on sports as a tool for national pride has empowered federations like the NBF to achieve excellence.

The technical highlight of the night finals and perhaps the most talked-about moment of the week, was the electrifying 70kg Women’s Final. The bout featured a high-stakes rematch between UK-based Patricia Mbata and Lagos-based powerhouse Blessing Orakwe.

The narrative heading into the ring was one of redemption. Orakwe had previously defeated Mbata during the National Sports Festival, a loss that had lingered for the diaspora-based fighter.

However, under the bright lights of the Lagos finals, the script was flipped. In a display of superior tactical movement and grit, Mbata delivered a masterclass performance to outpoint Orakwe, securing not just the national title but a “sweet revenge” that brought the audience to its feet.

Officials and fans alike noted that the level of skill displayed by both women served as a testament to the “growing depth” of the Nigerian boxing talent pool.

Beyond the medals and the ring, the NSC used the event to signal a radical shift in how sports are managed in Nigeria. Hon. Olopade emphasized that the Commission is moving away from purely administrative oversight toward a more holistic, athlete-centric model.

“We have changed our approach to sports administration,” Olopade explained. “Our focus now is to take better care of our athletes. We believe that when athletes feel supported, valued, and properly equipped, they will naturally take care of the nation through their world-class performances.”

With the trials concluded, the NBF and NSC will now move into the final phase of preparation for the Commonwealth Games. The quality of competition witnessed in Lagos has left officials “energized and hopeful” that Nigeria will not only participate but dominate on the international stage.
