Atletico Madrid forward Ademola Lookman could be in line for a tactical upgrade next season, with Antoine Griezmann reportedly set to leave the Spanish club for Major League Soccer side Orlando City SC.
Griezmann has long been linked with a move to the United States, and after months of speculation, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that an agreement has now been reached for the French star to join Orlando City at the end of the current campaign.
Despite having a year left on his contract, the 35-year-old is expected to complete a free transfer, bringing an end to a decorated two-decade career in European football.
His departure will mark a significant transition for Atletico Madrid. As one of the club’s most influential players, Griezmann leaves behind an impressive record of nearly 500 appearances, 211 goals, and 97 assists numbers that underline his importance under manager Diego Simeone.
Opportunity Opens for Lookman
Griezmann’s exit creates a major gap in Atletico’s attack, and rather than spending heavily in the transfer market, the club may look inward for solutions.
That scenario could benefit Lookman, who has so far been deployed mainly as a wide midfielder in Simeone’s structured 4-4-2 system.
While the role allows him to utilize his pace on the flanks, it also demands significant defensive responsibility limiting his attacking influence compared to his time at Atalanta BC, where he thrived in more advanced positions.
With the Frenchman set to depart, Lookman could be pushed further forward into a second striker role. This would place him closer to goal and better align with the attacking instincts that made him a standout performer in Serie A.

Replacing Griezmann, however, is no straightforward task. The French forward’s ability to drop deep, dictate play, and still contribute goals makes him a rare hybrid of playmaker and finisher.
Lookman offers a different profile more direct, explosive, and focused on goal threat but Simeone’s trust in the Nigerian suggests he could be given the chance to evolve his game.
