Former Nigerian international goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has thrown his support behind Stanley Nwabali’s decision to part ways with South African club Chippa United, insisting the Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper is ready for a bigger challenge.
Nwabali, 29, joined Chippa United in 2022 from Nigeria Premier Football League side Katsina United and quickly established himself as a key figure at the club.
During his time in South Africa, the goalkeeper made around 70 appearances across all competitions, earning widespread praise for his consistency and composure.
His impressive club performances translated to the international stage, where he rose to become Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper, further cementing his status as one of the country’s most reliable players.
Following reports that Chippa United have terminated Nwabali’s contract after his official request to leave, Shorunmu has insisted the move could be the right step if handled properly.
Speaking to Footy Africa, the former Africa Cup of Nations winner said he fully supports Nwabali’s decision, provided it aligns with his long-term development.
“If he feels this is the right time for him to leave the club, then I will support him. The most important thing is that the move helps his career and makes him an even better goalkeeper,” Shorunmu said.
Shorunmu also urged Nwabali’s representatives to be strategic in selecting his next destination, stressing the importance of regular playing time, stability, and continued growth.
“I trust his agent will secure a good contract for him. He is an excellent goalkeeper and our number one. We’ve all seen his quality, and he still has room to improve,” he added.
Nwabali’s journey from the NPFL to becoming Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper has been widely praised within football circles, and many observers see a move away from Chippa United as a natural progression in his career.
With his experience, international exposure, and growing reputation, the Super Eagles shot-stopper is now expected to attract interest from clubs seeking a proven and reliable goalkeeper ready for the next level.
