Coach Abdul Maikaba born March 3, 1965, is a highly respected Nigerian tactician, widely regarded as one of the most intellectually grounded coaches in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Known for his calm demeanor and commitment to beautiful, possession-based football and his rise to the pinnacle of Nigerian coaching was not an overnight success.
Maikaba’s first major breakthrough as a head coach came with Wikki Tourists (2015–2016). In Bauchi, he performed what many fans considered a miracle, transforming a modest side into genuine title contenders. He finished 4th in his debut season, playing a brand of attractive football that earned him the nickname “The Professor.”

In 2016, he joined Akwa United, where he solidified his status as an elite tactician. His tenure in Uyo was marked by silverware, as he led the “Promise Keepers” to the Federation Cup (Aiteo Cup) title in 2017. This success brought continental football to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium and cemented Maikaba’s reputation for building teams that could both win and entertain.
Following his success in the South-South, Maikaba moved to Jos to manage Plateau United. He maintained the club’s status as a powerhouse, and they were arguably the favorites to win the league in the 2019/2020 season before the COVID-19 pandemic forced an abrupt cancellation of the campaign.

He later took the reins at the legendary Enugu Rangers, navigating a period of transition for the “Flying Antelopes.” Despite the pressure of managing one of Nigeria’s most historic clubs, he remained committed to his possession-based style.
In 2023, he made a homecoming to Kano Pillars, helping stabilize the club during their return to the top flight, before eventually returning to Wikki Tourists in 2024 to lead a new project in the NNL with the goal of returning them to the NPFL.
Tactical Philosophy: “Ritieni e Passa”
What sets Maikaba apart is his unwavering commitment to his philosophy, which he calls “Ritieni e Passa” (Hold and Pass). While many Nigerian coaches favor a direct, physical style, Maikaba prioritizes:
Midfield Dominance: Using a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation to create numerical advantages.
Youth Integration: A firm believer in “if you’re good enough, you’re old enough,” he has a track record of scouting and blooding young talents.
The “Professor” Method: His training sessions are famous for their focus on “Two-Touch” football and positional awareness.
Maikaba’s domestic success naturally led to national duties. He was appointed as the assistant Coach of the Nigeria U-20 team (Flying Eagles) between 2018 and 2019. Although his time with the youth team was brief, his focus on technical development left a lasting impression on the discovery and nurturing system.
Today, Abdul Maikaba is regarded not just as a coach, but as an educator of the game. His legacy is found in the many players he coached who moved to European leagues and the “Maikaba-style” of football that continues to influence younger coaches across Nigeria.
