The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has clarified the reason behind the Super Eagles’ absence from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) bronze medal ceremony.
Despite securing third place with a 4-2 penalty victory over Egypt, the Nigerian team was notably absent during the award distribution ceremony on Sunday, January 18, following the AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal.
Ibrahim Gusau, President of the NFF, explained that the players could not attend the ceremony because their respective clubs had requested their immediate return after the third-place playoff on Saturday, January 17.
Gusau further revealed that this situation was not unique to Nigeria, as Egypt faced similar pressure from their clubs.
“The players could not remain for the ceremony on Sunday because their clubs insisted on their immediate return,” Gusau explained in a statement posted on X by journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.
“Had the ceremony taken place on the same day as the match, the players would have been present to collect their medals.”
The bronze medal marks Nigeria’s record 9th third-place finish in AFCON history, solidifying their dominant position in the tournament’s annals.
Gusau confirmed that the medals were in his possession, awaiting formal presentation to the players at a later time.
The Super Eagles’ absence from the ceremony raised eyebrows, but the NFF’s explanation provides clarity on the matter.
This development follows the growing trend of club commitments often clashing with international football schedules.
