Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed the reasons behind his unexpected retirement from international football, a decision that comes just three weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off in Morocco.

The veteran defender made the announcement on Thursday evening, only 48 hours after being included in Nigeria’s 54-man provisional squad for the tournament.

His decision has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football community, with many questioning the timing so close to a major competition.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the 30-year-old said his retirement was influenced by family priorities and a need to reassess his long-term commitments.

“I think sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and know the circumstances change,” Troost-Ekong said.

He added that although representing Nigeria had been one of his greatest honours, the demands of international football had taken a toll.

“I have a young family and I have sacrificed a lot time wise, injuries, travelling things that are all part of being an international football player, which I love doing and wouldn’t change for anything.”

The former Watford and PAOK defender explained that he felt it was the right moment to step aside.

“There comes a time when you have to weigh up all those things and understand where your priority is, and I think if you can’t commit to that one hundred percent then it’s time to pass the baton on.”

Despite his exit, Troost-Ekong expressed confidence in the next generation of Super Eagles defenders, insisting the team has enough quality to fill the void.

“We have so much talent in the team and players that are ready to step up… you have to be brave enough to step away then.”

However, his departure comes at a difficult time for Nigeria’s defence.

Rising star Benjamin Fredrick widely tipped as Troost-Ekong’s successor has been ruled out of AFCON with a knee injury.

The 20-year-old had impressed since his debut in May and had even displaced the former captain in some World Cup qualifiers, signalling a shift toward a younger backline.

With both Troost-Ekong and Fredrick unavailable, head coach Eric Chelle now faces a major defensive dilemma as he reshuffles his squad ahead of Nigeria’s opening match in Morocco.

The Malian tactician will be banking on other defenders to step up and steady the backline as the Super Eagles chase continental glory.
