Super Eagles icon Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has received the ultimate praise, being declared the greatest African footballer of all time by former Premier League midfield powerhouse, Victor Wanyama.
Seventeen years after hanging up his boots, Okocha’s enduring legacy of dazzling skill continues to be celebrated by the biggest names in the sport. Wanyama, the former Kenyan international who starred for Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, conferred the title on the 1994 AFCON winner during a recent viral social media clip.
The 34-year-old Wanyama, known for his diverse football palate, was fielding a series of quick-fire questions covering his preferred attackers, playmakers, and defenders. While his other answers ranged from Ronaldo (R9) to Andrea Iniesta, the choice for the continent’s top talent was delivered with absolute conviction.
When asked to name the best African player ever, Wanyama simply declared: “That has to be Jay Jay Okocha.”
The legendary Nigerian playmaker’s flair and unforgettable impact, both on the continent and globally, clearly remain unparalleled for the Premier League veteran, who reserved the honour and title for Okocha.
