Mayor Defends Beleaguered Nice Fans: ‘Don’t Stigmatise’ Supporters After Player Confrontation

2 Min Read

The fallout from a volatile confrontation between hundreds of furious OGC Nice supporters and the club’s players and staff has escalated into a national debate, prompting the city’s Mayor, Christian Estrosi, to intervene. Following a dismal 3-1 loss to FC Lorient, approximately 400 frustrated fans stormed the training ground, allegedly targeting players like Super Eagles star Terem Moffi and Jérémie Boga, along with sporting director Florian Maurice.

Despite confirmation from multiple sources of players being hit, kicked, or spat at, Estrosi has publicly attempted to soften the narrative. The Mayor cited the prefecture’s assessment, stating that “No physical violence was noted” during the exchange, and called for a rejection of what he termed a “controversy that far exceeds the reality of the facts.”

In his defence of the supporters, Estrosi argued against a collective shaming: “Neither Nice nor our supporters deserve to be collectively stigmatised.” He urged for calm and dialogue to allow the struggling club, currently on a six-game losing streak, to move forward.

Despite the Mayor’s plea for restraint, the incident has had an immediate and severe impact on the dressing room. Moffi is reportedly considering an immediate exit, Boga is weighing his future, and Head Coach Franck Haise’s position is becoming increasingly precarious. The crisis has left OGC Nice in a fragile state, with unrest stretching from the stands to the core of the team’s operations.
