Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has admitted he made tactical mistakes despite guiding the Super Eagles to a 2–1 victory over Tanzania in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The three-time African champions started their campaign brightly, taking an early lead when Semi Ajayi powered home a header to put Nigeria in control within the opening minutes.
Tanzania responded with determination and were rewarded when Charles M’Mombwa equalised, briefly shifting the momentum of the game.
However, Nigeria reacted almost immediately, as Ademola Lookman finished clinically just two minutes later to restore the Super Eagles’ advantage and secure all three points.
Speaking after the match, Chelle was honest in his assessment of his performance on the sidelines.
“I made a lot of choices; some were good, some were not good,” the coach said.
“What matters is that the team reacted well after conceding. We showed character, but tactically I know I can do better.”
Chelle also praised his players for their resilience and focus, particularly after conceding the equaliser.
“The reaction was important. When you concede like that, the game can change, but the players stayed focused and showed quality,” he added.
Nigeria are now firmly underway in their quest for a fourth AFCON title as the tournament continues in Morocco.
