Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, has confirmed that strategic preparations for Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff matches are already in full swing, emphasizing that every upcoming fixture will be treated as a final.

Speaking to reporters, Dikko revealed that planning began immediately after Nigeria’s victory over Benin Republic, marking the start of an all-out effort to secure qualification for the global tournament.

“The first thing we did, immediately after we beat Benin Republic that same night, was start having meetings with the players,” Dikko disclosed.
“Because we now have three games, likely two in Africa and one in the intercontinental playoffs, and every game is a final. So we have to focus. We are playing three finals: two finals in four days in Morocco next month and one final in March.”

The NSC boss explained that the commission’s approach centers on player motivation, financial incentives, and seamless logistics, ensuring that the Super Eagles enter each match fully equipped both mentally and physically.

“Satisfy the players; give them the best bonuses they can get. Forget the bonuses you used to give before you have to pay them final-level bonuses. Provide all the logistics and keep everyone focused,” he said.

Dikko also highlighted the collaboration between the NSC and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), noting that daily meetings are being held to coordinate efforts and maintain open communication with the players.

“We are already meeting with the NFF every day, calling the players, and working together to ensure that everyone stays focused,” he added.

Expressing confidence in Nigeria’s chances, Dikko credited the strong backing from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the government, and millions of Nigerian supporters as key to achieving success.

“I believe that with the support of Mr. President, Nigerians, and our players, we will deliver that World Cup ticket.”

Nigeria will kick off their playoff campaign this month in Morocco, where they face Gabon in one of the semi-final clashes. The other fixture will see DR Congo take on Cameroon, with the winners advancing to the CAF Intercontinental Playoff final for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
