Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has once again omitted Monday Gift from his 21-player squad for Nigeria’s 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifying double-header against Benin Republic, despite the striker’s red-hot form in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
The decision has sparked debate among fans and pundits, with many questioning why one of Nigeria’s most in-form forwards continues to be overlooked.
‘I’ll Keep Fighting for My Shirt’ – Monday Gift
Currently starring for Washington Spirit, Monday Gift has scored eight goals this season, placing her among the NWSL’s top scorers ahead of several forwards included in Nigeria’s current squad.
Her exclusion follows a familiar trend that began when she was dropped ahead of the 2025 WAFCON in Morocco, a tournament the Super Falcons eventually went on to win.
Despite the disappointment, the 22-year-old remains optimistic and determined.
“It’s a big challenge for me, but I’m going to face it and keep pushing until I get my shirt,” she told ESPN earlier this year.
“I believe my time will come; I just have to keep working.”
Abiodun Included, Oshoala Leads the Attack
While Monday Gift misses out, her Washington Spirit teammate Deborah Abiodun makes the cut.
Madugu’s squad features a strong blend of experience and youth, led by six-time African Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala, now at Al Hilal FC (Saudi Arabia), and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who recently scored for Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Also returning are Chiamaka Nnadozie, Ashleigh Plumptre, Michelle Alozie, Christy Ucheibe, and Jennifer Echegini, while rising stars Joy Omewa and Folashade Ijamilusi retain their places after impressive club performances.
Benin Clash: WAFCON Qualification on the Line
The Super Falcons will face Benin Republic in a two-legged tie, the first leg on October 23 at Stade Kégué in Lomé, Togo, and the return leg on October 28 in Abeokuta, Nigeria.
Nigeria, ten-time African champions, remain firm favourites to qualify for the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, which also doubles as Africa’s qualifying route for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Madugu’s latest squad highlights both strength in depth and ongoing selection controversies, as Monday Gift’s absence continues to dominate fan discussions.
