Nigerian striker Akor Adams made his return to club football on Sunday as Sevilla fell 3–1 to Mallorca in their La Liga clash.
Adams, who impressed during the international break with the Super Eagles, started on the bench after playing over 116 minutes for Nigeria across two matches. Head coach Matías Almeyda opted to rest him, handing Isaac Romero a starting role, but the forward failed to make an impact.
Sevilla took the lead through Rubén Vargas, but defensive lapses allowed Mallorca to overturn the result and secure all three points.
Adams entered the match in the 71st minute, replacing Romero. Though short on time, he made his presence felt, completing three passes, creating one chance, and progressing play once into the final third. The forward also contributed defensively, recording one clearance, one recovery, and winning two aerial duels.
Reflecting on the defeat, coach Almeyda said:
“We took the lead and were controlling the match. But when you waste chances, you give the opponent a way back. We made too many mistakes in the second half that reflect our current reality.”
With Sevilla still struggling for consistency and Romero underperforming, Adams could be in line for a starting role in their upcoming La Liga fixture against Real Sociedad.
The 24-year-old will be eager to build on his strong international form and reestablish himself as a key figure in Sevilla’s attack.
