Former Super Falcons forward Desire Oparanozie has thrown her full support behind Nigeria’s women’s national team, urging them to complete their WAFCON 2024 journey by clinching a historic 10th title this Sunday against hosts Morocco.
Oparanozie’s comments came after Nigeria’s 2-1 semi-final triumph over defending champions South Africa, a result that sent shockwaves across the continent and reaffirmed the Super Falcons’ elite pedigree in African football.
“Yes, I think they can win WAFCON,” Oparanozie told Showmax Premier League. “Nigeria has talented players with winning experience, and I’m confident they will get the required result.”
The former captain, who played a key role in previous WAFCON triumphs, hailed the team’s chemistry and collective drive, highlighting that every player has stepped up to deliver on the big stage.
“They’ve all been brilliant on the field. Every one of them has shown up as a team, a really effective team. It’s been beautiful to watch.”
Oparanozie also praised the quality and competitiveness of the tournament, noting how much African women’s football has evolved in recent years.
“This WAFCON edition has been thrilling,” she said. “Winning games is no longer a walk in the park. Every win comes from hard work. Teams are pushing themselves, and it shows how far the women’s game has come.”
Having cleared the daunting hurdle of South Africa, Nigeria’s sights are now firmly set on Sunday’s final against Morocco, who will enjoy home advantage and the backing of a passionate crowd in Rabat.
The Falcons are seeking to add a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title to their storied legacy, a feat that would further underscore their status as the queens of African football.
