Former Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) forward Umar Abba is on the brink of securing a move to South African top-flight side Polokwane City FC, following a standout campaign in the 2024/2025 Rwanda Premier League.

The prolific striker departed Kigali on Wednesday morning and is expected to land in South Africa within hours to complete formalities and sign with the Dstv Premiership outfit.

Abba was the standout performer for Bugesera FC, finishing as the league’s top scorer last season. His consistent goal-scoring form has attracted attention from clubs across Africa, but Polokwane City appear to have won the race for his signature.

The 26-year-old is no stranger to Nigerian football fans. He previously turned out for Lobi Stars, and also had spells at Gombe United, Katsina United, Plateau United, and Wikki Tourists, showcasing his talent across multiple NPFL clubs.

Polokwane City will be hoping that Abba’s arrival boosts their attacking options ahead of the new season, as they aim to improve on their mid-table finish last term.

Abba’s journey reflects a growing trend of Nigerian footballers using lesser-known African leagues as springboards to more competitive environments. His move to South Africa is seen as a step up in his career and a potential gateway to even bigger stages.

The deal is expected to be completed within the next 48 hours, pending a medical and final negotiations between both parties.
