2 Min Read

Ghana’s Black Stars bowed out of the Unity Cup 2025 at the semi-final stage, but not without a fight, showcasing immense heart and resilience in a narrow 2-1 defeat to rivals Nigeria in a captivating encounter in West London. Despite trailing by two goals, a spirited second-half performance, sparked by exciting new talent, nearly saw them orchestrate a memorable comeback.

The first half proved challenging for the Black Stars, who found themselves two goals down, with an unfortunate own goal by Ebenezer Annette contributing to Nigeria’s advantage. Goalkeeper Razak Simpson also endured a nervy moment but recovered well.

However, the introduction of 19-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi at the interval proved a masterstroke. The dynamic wing-back, making his senior international debut, was a revelation, injecting pace, trickery, and an attacking threat down the right flank that visibly lifted his teammates and the passionate Ghanaian supporters. His fearless performance was a significant highlight, hinting at a bright future.

Ghana’s determination was rewarded when Brandon Thomas-Asante, in only his third appearance for the national team, clinically finished a swift counter-attacking move to score his first international goal. The strike sent the Ghanaian fans into raptures and set the stage for a tense final quarter of the match.

With momentum on their side, the Black Stars pushed relentlessly for an equalizer. The creative Bar Bonsu was a constant menace, and captain Jordan Ayew was inches away from drawing his side level, narrowly failing to convert a difficult chance at the far post after a superb delivery.

Though the final whistle brought disappointment, Ghana can hold their heads high. The fighting spirit displayed in the second half, coupled with the exciting emergence of young players like Yirenkyi and the goal-scoring impact of Thomas-Asante, provides a strong foundation for the future. The Black Stars will now look to finish their Unity Cup campaign on a high in the third-place playoff.
